Why is Obama using tax cuts to jump start the economy?

Aren't tax cuts a purely republican strategy?

Didn't Reagan and Bush both use extensive tax cuts to boost the economy at the beginning of both of their first terms?

Has Obama gone "Reagan" on us?|||President Obama is giving the tax cuts to the majority of Americans unlike Reagan and Bush who set up corporate welfare programs.|||It is just his plan. Mwahahahaha!|||Obama sat down with Democrats AND Republicans to create this plan.. and for good reason... either party rarely gets it right on their own.. but you don't have to look any further than the Clinton years to see how well they can do when they actually work together (Clinton with a Republican Congress)

So yes, it's a "mutt" plan... but that might be just what we need.|||Change... Change... Change...

LOL Jokes on the idiots that voted for him. Just more of the same, told ya so.|||A lot of those are window dressing an non-structural tax cuts; meaning they won't be perrmanent.

BUT

The admission of the principle is the important part. They are essentially throwing the liberal ideas UNDER THE BUS by admitting that tax cuts do indeed stimulate the economy.

BUT

What works in the short term should also work in the long term so WHY ON EARTH won't they cut deeper and more permanently?

It's like taking an antibiotic for 1/4 of the time that you are supposed to. You admit that you need it and it works but you foolishly just stop for no good reason.|||Because it works... Higher taxes like what we saw in the 90's is what for the most part put us in this situation. I find it ironic, that when we know something works... we don't use it. But when we know something tears the economy down... we are all over it.|||The term "tax cut" is a misnomer. He is redistributing money from people that pay taxes to those that don't. A real "tax cut" would be to lower the amount of taxes people pay out of every pay check. Obama does not propose this. He wants to give a check to people in the lower and middle classes that don't pay taxes anyway. This is nothing more than a way to buy votes, it will not help the economy at all.|||Because it works...JFK proved that........changed his mind again.........lol|||A $500 tax credit isnt anything over a year its $9.62 a week. Big deal! I wont get it anyway because I have a job %26amp; make too much money.

I guess you could go to Mcdonalds but its not enough for 2 to eat there.|||because he knows that tax increases will totally destroy it!|||Well, cutting taxes isn't really a Republican or a Democratic strategy. It is an economic strategy. Politics kicks in when the President decides who gets the tax cuts. With Bush, tax cuts went to the wealthy. With Obama, tax cuts will go to the masses.|||I never thought I would defend him and I don't like him. However I think he has had a real reality check as he has gotten up on what is going on in Washington. I think he is doing what he think will help pull us out of the mess we are in. I'm tired of it being blamed on Bush as well! There is enough blame to go around for both parties! Congress has not acted in our best interest ! The wall street bankers and investment managers have acted only in there best interest not ours! As a result we have a mess. Maybe it is time to stop wasting time blaming and work on fixing. Congress is having all these little cat fights about Burris why don't they shut up, seat the man and get there butts to work! They have nothing on him(Burris) he has never been involved in scandal and has been elected at least twice by the voters of Illinois. He isn't a really bad choice it could have been far worse. It's time to move on to the important things.|||I guess he's at least smart enough not to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs right off in these conditions. If he did that who would he tax to buy his votes with?

He did make a new position for an efficiency expert in the cabinet though, and I really like that. I just hope it's not the normal disingenuous all for show move, and he will really use it. I have my doubts when I think about his and the democrats history, but there is hope.|||Please define "boost the economy"? What was boosted?|||Tax cuts are fine, provided they go to people who actually have some need for them. All tax cuts for the rich ever do is create massive paper asset bubbles - US equities 1924-1929, US %26amp; UK equities 1983-1987, Japan in the 80's, US real estate 2002-2007. Granted, asset bubbles can come about because of monetary actions as well (indeed, the largest usually owe to both), but lots of idle rich people with lots of idle cash eventually becomes debt, which in turn fosters the creation of sustainable asset prices as people buy stocks, bonds, or real estate with borrowed money. It all comes crashing down in the end, however - as we're currently seeing.|||look if a person is taxed less they have more money in their paycheck, if they have more money in their paycheck, they buy more goods, when they buy more goods, the economy grows. it is very simple. the government does not produce goods, the government does not sell goods. the government takes your money (if you have a job) takes the huge cut to pay their salerys and for the raises they give themselves and then they take the rest of YOUR money and decide (because you are not capible of deciding for yourself) where the money is doled out. Obama wants to create government jobs and healthcare and have the working people pay for it. at least with Mccains plan you could decide for yourself how to spend YOUR OWN money.|||First, he may lack confidence that he can get his massive, throw it all at the wall and see if it sticks program through a Congress controlled by his own party. Who knows paving the prairies may not create a great economy. Remember Reagan got his plan through Congress and the Republicans were a minority in both houses.

Second, it is what slick politicians do. Try to coop the other party so when things go south he can blame them. Remember his whole campaign seemed to revolve around blaming G Bush. And I assume that if things don't work out he will continue blaming Bush as much as possible. The Democrats did this with Herbert Hoover for over fifty years and Americans for some unexplainable reason believed it.|||Once again Metal Mike proves that he's banged his head one to many times or maybe it's mercury poisoning. I like how the House/Senate dems may fight him on it. That should get interesting.|||Hussein OSame is helping his rich donors and corporate CEOs to get more corporate welfare.
